ALER invites proposals for a new White Paper on the Common Core Standards

Last year ALER released its first White Paper, Leadership for Literacy in the 21st Century, by Jill Lewis-Spector and Annemarie B. Jay. The first White Paper has been well-received, and at the Spring ALER Board of Directors meeting, a second White Paper project was approved to focus on the Common Core Standards.
Background: With the passage of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) by 45 states (to date, only Texas, Virginia, Alaska, Nebraska, and Minnesota have not adopted them), many changes are already occurring in K-12 school settings as well as in colleges and universities. The CCSS define the knowledge and skills students should acquire during their K-12 education so they are college and career ready upon graduation. As literacy teacher educators who focus on all levels from P-20, ALER is uniquely poised to prepare and release a White Paper that examines the CCSS from multiple perspectives that represent ALER's four divisions: Adult Learning, Clinical Research and Practice, College Literacy, and Teacher Education.

Call for Proposals: ALER seeks proposals from multi-divisional teams that will examine the CCSS through various lenses (e.g., Do the standards enhance or reduce literacy instruction? What are the implications for schools and also for colleges and universities? For literacy teacher education? For students who struggle? For adults in the workplace and other settings?)

ALER will provide the author team a stipend of $1,000 upon completion of the White Paper ALER will also have the paper professionally formatted so it can be distributed as a PDF from the organization’s website and through other venues.

Timeline: Proposals are due to Laurie Elish-Piper ( by no later than August 1, 2012. Executive Committee members will review the proposals to identify the one that will be selected. The target date to release the White Paper is November, 2013 at the ALER conference in Dallas, TX.

Proposal Requirements: The Proposal should be 2-3 pages in length and address the following topics:
1. Author names, affiliations, contact information, and ALER divisional memberships
2. Summary of qualifications of authors
3. Outline of paper that shows major topics to be addressed in the paper
4. Proposed timeline for completing the white paper

Author teams will be notified by September 1, 2012 on the status of their proposals.

Questions: If you have questions or need additional information related to the white paper, please email Laurie Elish-Piper at
